Switchable glass is laminated glass with a layer of PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) film sealed between two panels. At the flip of a switch, it changes from clear and transparent to frosted and opaque — giving instant privacy without blinds, curtains, or films that need replacing. What Determines Switchable Glass Price
Switchable glass is priced per square foot, and the rate depends on the specification, the electrical setup and the site. Privetek prepares a customised quote for each project, so the price reflects the panels, controls and installation your space needs.
- Panel size, shape and quantity: Panels are cut to order from 200mm x 200mm up to 1800mm x 3500mm, and custom sizes and shapes are available. Total glass area and the number of panels drive the quote.
- Glass thickness: Standard thicknesses are 10mm, 12mm and 13.5mm, rated at 35 dB, 37 dB and 39 dB, with more thicknesses available. Choose thicker glass where sound reduction matters, such as meeting rooms and consulting rooms.
- Glass type: Tempered low iron glass is standard. Heat strengthened, fire rated, curved, tinted and heat soaked glass are also available.
- Indoor or outdoor use: Standard panels are made for indoor use. Privetek offers a separate outdoor-rated range, so mention early if the glass will face the weather.
- Controls and electrical requirements: Panels run on 60 to 80 VAC and use about 5 watts per square metre while clear. The exact voltage is confirmed when the order is placed. Remote controls, wall switches, home automation and building management system integration all shape the control setup.
- Installation complexity: Installation covers site assessment, measurement, fitting, electrical connection and testing. Doors add scope: switchable glass works in swing doors, sliding doors, some sliding folding systems and automatic sensor based sliding doors.
- Glass or film: Switchable film is applied to existing glass, so no new glass panel is needed. Privetek's smart film guide describes it as a relatively low-cost, easy-to-retrofit option. Film is non-washable and suited to dry areas, and it carries a 2 year warranty, against 5 years for electrical failure and 10 years against delamination on switchable glass.
